2026 Summer Shorts Edit

Shorts are a summer staple, but they can often be the most charged pieces in our closets. Fit is tricky, and we’ve been taught to have a lot of feelings about whether our legs are “allowed” to be seen.

Heard this the other day and I love it:

“Imagine being legs. You do so much for a person, ferry them around everywhere. And in return, their human is like, ‘My legs are so gross! I hate my legs! Ugh, my legs! I could NEVER show my legs!’ Poor legs. Justice for legs.”

So, before we talk about fit, length, and silhouettes, let’s agree your legs are not the problem.

This guide will help you find a pair you both look & feel good in. Don't force yourself into one version of summer dressing. Instead, find what works for your body, your comfort, and your real life.

Fit: Shorts should skim your body rather than cling, giving ease through the hips and thighs. If the fabric pulls across the front, the pockets flare open, or the leg openings cut into your thighs, try sizing up or choosing a different style.

Shorts with an A-line shape vs. those that hug the thighs can give you more room to move and often a more comfortable fit.

And please don’t just stand in front of the mirror when you try them on. Walk around. Sit down. Move your body. Shorts need to work in your real life.

Length: Short and mid-length styles are easy for casual days, while Bermudas offer more coverage and are typically more polished. If you're nervous about Bermudas, pair them with a heeled or platform shoe. The most natural-looking length for your body is a pair that ends where your thigh begins to narrow.

Fabric: The fabric changes the feeling of the shorts. Linen, cotton poplin, and denim feel more casual, while twill and tailored styles feel dressier.
